Hot Mamaz Dances Obesity Away

Filipinos love for singing and dancing is well known. On 2 December 2011, it was the love for dancing that brought together over a hundred Filipino-Australians and their friends to the Concord RSL.

The event “Danz Gig Revival” was organised by the Hot Mamaz, headed by Neria Soliman and Baby Kasilag. Aside from providing the guests an enjoyable evening, it aimed to promote dance exercise as part of getting fit and ultimately in obesity control. The program’s motto of “dance, enjoy, get fit” was at work as the dance floor was nearly full all the time with everyone having a fun time and there was nobody who could be classified as obese.

The event’s special guests were Daniel Samuel and Rachel Jones from the television show “You Think You Can Dance”. Daniel Samuel and Baby Kasilag, as well as the other dance couples showcased crisp tango and cha-cha steps. Also in attendance and enjoying the event were a number of Filipino-Australian community leaders and a few members of the FilipinoPressSydney group. These included husband and wife teams Cen and Ruben Amores [President of Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations and of Kapitbahayan Cooperative Ltd, respectively]; Tess and Atoy Sayas [Philippine Community Council]; Mon and Nilda Carpo and Violi Calvert [FilPressSydney].

In keeping with the night’s fitness thrust, a simple fare was served accompanied by a carefully selected Dance Menu. The highlight of the night was the group participation in dancing the Zumba which definitely burned some calories as the vigorous dance went continuously for nearly half hour. The group equally enjoyed doing the New Vogue Dances which required precision moves as the participants synchronise-dance around in circles in the whole area of the dance floor. The next Danz Gigs are scheduled to be held on 28 January and 10 March 2012. More details will be circulated nearer the dates of these events.
