Australian Diabetes Council and GWS GIANTS team up to tackle diabetes
On 2 May 2012, the Australian Diabetes Council and GWS GIANTS publically announce an important three year partnership to tackle diabetes in the state’s Diabetes Capital – Western Sydney.
Western Sydney has the highest prevalence of diabetes in NSW, with 7 out of the state’s top ten hotspots for diabetes located in the area. In fact, between 2005 and 2010 the rate of diabetes in Western Sydney has more than doubled. GWS GIANTS and Australian Diabetes Council will be coming together with a shared commitment to the communities of Greater Western Sydney.
“We are delighted to be partnering with the GIANTS who have a deep commitment to the community. Western Sydney is an area in which the GIANTS hold a unique place and the team has a special ability to involve the community in healthy and active lifestyles especially to children through involvement in initiatives such as NAB AFL Auskick. With type 2 diabetes growing at an alarming rate in the area, fostering active lifestyles is absolutely crucial.” says Nicola Stokes, Australian Diabetes Council Chief Executive Officer.
“GIANTS midfielder Sam Reid, who has type 1 diabetes, is also an important role model for those living with the condition, pursuing a successful sporting career without letting the condition hold him back,” says Stokes.
GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews says: “We are very committed to making a positive impact on the social and health issues affecting Western Sydney but also the broader community, and so are very excited about our new partnership with Australian Diabetes Council. Together we hope to work to tackle one of the biggest health challenges impacting the community and Australia as a whole.”
As a part of the partnership, GWS Giants will make special appearances at Australian Diabetes Council kid’s camps and other events such as the Corporate Games and the partnership will also mean special deals and offers for members of the Australian Diabetes Council. It builds on Australian Diabetes Council’s wide range of community initiatives in Western Sydney, including support groups and local seminars for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Hello
I have 3 children with type 1 Diabetes
I don’t like the sound of the article insinuating that living in western Sydney we are more prone to this disease. My children are very active healthy children whether we live in western Sydney or another part of the state would not have made a difference Type I Diabetes is possibly genetic in this case. Not good to confuse type 1 and type2.
