Mid-flight incident - 04/08/2019
WHILE doing the rounds in our garden two days ago, I chanced upon this beehive at the edge of the bush directly behind our lemon tree.

What a curious find. Instinctively I grabbed my camera and took some shots, being careful not to get too near or to disturb them in any way.
It’s the first time I have come across this.
The following morning, with the sun shinning bright, I went back with my camera to visit these busy creatures.
Gone.
Overnight, the busy, crowded creatures had vanished. All that was left was this little, tell-tale mark in the photo below
What could have happened? Where they devoured by some creature?
Can anyone familiar with bees offer some explanation or provide information?
The hive was on a thin branch about six feet from the ground, hidden behind leaves and small branches.
There were no traces on the hive in the weeds on the ground, nor any signs of some disturbance around the site.
